How to Break into Property in 2024

Updated: Nov 8

Property magazine on kitchen counter

So, you think you'd make a great estate agent because you like looking at houses? Cute. But let's be honest: the reality is a little less Selling Sunset, a little more DIY SOS. Still, dreams are free, which is why we’re here to help with our top 10 tips for breaking into the property industry without tripping over the welcome mat.

  1. First off, you don’t need a PhD in Property or a complex understanding of the mortgage process to become an estate agent. Got a driver's license and access to four wheels? Congrats, you're practically halfway there.

  2. Tailor your CV. Make it so unique that even amidst a pile of "Proficient in Microsoft Office" it stands out, and don’t forget to mention your undying passion for the property industry in the about me section. Trust us; it works.

  3. Don't treat job applications like you're feeding pigeons in the park—scattergun approaches lead to forgetful conversations and cringe-worthy callbacks. Aim, apply, and remember.

  4. Leverage a recruiter. Self-serving advice? Maybe so. But we can offer you one thing you likely lack (besides experience)—connections. The endorsement of a reputable recruiter can be invaluable in securing your foot in the door. But remember, we’re only as good as what you tell us; we can't champion someone we don’t fully understand.

  5. Make a LinkedIn profile that screams "Hire me, I'm desperate to become an estate agent, but in a professional way" and brace for the influx of opportunities. On the topic of social media, keep it clean unless you want your potential boss to see last week’s "epic" dance moves on the pub table.

  6. Understand the industry. Each role in an estate agency pays differently. Work out what your need and know what you're getting into before applying.

  7. Employers are on the hunt for paradoxes: individuals who thrive in a team yet outpace in the sales race, are money-hungry yet crave learning. Yes, even mastering the art of door unlocking is seen as a skill.

  8. Show enthusiasm for technology and social media. Estate agency is evolving, and demonstrating your understanding of online listings, virtual tours, and engaging potential buyers digitally can set you apart as a forward-thinking candidate.

  9. Nailed the interview? Brilliant. But don't get too comfy. Show them you've done your homework, and maybe, just maybe, they'll think you're not a complete gamble.

  10. And lastly, learn the lingo. Nothing screams "rookie" like asking what "Sold subject to contract" means.

If by some miracle you've read through this and still want to dive into the world of estate agency, maybe you've got what it takes. Or maybe you just enjoy pain... Either way, get in touch or upload your CV today. Who knows? You might just be the next Phil or Kirsty we're looking for – Not catching the reference? Maybe a little more research is required!
